The Rutlands® cordless 40V plunge saw, comes with a 1.4m guide rail, 2 x 20V 4.0Ah batteries and dual port charger. It features a high performance, brushless motor that maintains consistent power and torque under load.

A plunge saw  differs from a regular circular saw in that they can plunge into the material to a predetermined depth during the cut. The depth-of-cut can be adjusted to be just slightly over the thickness of the board being cut allowing for reduced splintering and tear-out. They are an essential  tool for joiners, carpenters and kitchen fitters who typically work with composite sheet materials and laminates up to 25mm thick.

A three position blade mode dial allows quick switching between scoring cuts, free plunging and blade change modes. The scoring cut setting locks the depth of cut to 2.5mm, providing a shallow, preliminary pass on melamine or veneer faced boards to minimise chipping and tear-out. The free plunge mode is selected for normal operation, whilst the blade change mode locks the blade height in position to perform quick and easy blade changes using the onboard hex key. The supplied ultra-thin, 1.6mm kerf blade is specially designed to remove less material whilst cutting, reducing power drain and allowing you to work faster and for longer.

A variable speed range of 2,000 to 5,500rpm, allows you to finely control the speed to suit the blade, application and material, with the current speed setting illuminated on the 5 level LED display.  A 2-position depth stop shows the current depth of cut both with and without a guide rail.  The saw has a bevel cutting range of -1° to 47°, providing the capacity to under/overcut. An anti-tip lock within the baseplate locks the saw onto the guide rail, preventing the saw from lifting and tipping over when making bevel cuts.

The 1.4 metre single piece guide rail features two full length rubber strips on the underside, protecting the workpiece from damage whilst increasing friction to prevent movement. A sacrificial rubber strip on the edge of the rail acts as a splinter guard, applying downward pressure onto the material to minimise tear-out. Once trimmed to the blade kerf on first use, the splinter guard indicates the exact cutting edge, allowing the guide rail to be positioned precisely at the scribe mark.

The guide rail is compatible with other leading brands. Included is a 165mm, 48T thin kerf TCT blade, 1.4m guide rail, 2 x 20V 4.0Ah batteries, 4.0A dual port charger, blade change key and dust port adaptor. ©

Nice

Very nice looking saw. Performed good so far. Very similar to a wired competitor without the wire or brushes. I'm happy.

Cordless Freedom

Bought this as a replacement for my Makita track saw that was recently stolen. I cut to size at lot of sheets of melamine faced MDF and have been very impressed with both accuracy and cleanliness of the cut. I tested with and without using the scoring mode and the finish was far better using the scoring followed by full depth cut. Double charger is great as it saves a lot of wasted time - but I think i may invest in another couple of batteries as back up. Dust extraction is not the best, as it kicks out dust everywhere - so i had to connect to my vac. Freedom of cordless is great as it allows you to watch the cut rather than the trailing cable. 9 out of 10 due to dust extraction.

Would buy again

I bought this plunge saw for my next project of building a hardwood deck, where there are going to be lots of repeat straight and angle cuts. I've tested it out an old sheet of ply and it functions really well. So much easier to pass the saw over the work rather than push the sheet through a table saw. Nice fine blade left a good finish on ply so it should be perfect on a hardwood. You need to add a lot of pressure to the knob that locks off the plunge depth or it can slip if you lean on the saw. Maybe that's just my bad technique though. Overall very pleased with the overall build and accuracy and would buy again.

Great Saw

I have used for just over a week and i am very pleased with the results. The saw leaves a smooth surface, with no tear out, that requires no additional finishing. Nice aluminium cast body and base plate that does not flex. Dust extraction is not good unless you connect to a shop vac, as the dust just ejects around the shop otherwise. Note that both batteries have to be installed to operate. I suppose that is why you get the double charger. I have only used so far on panels and sheets that were a maximum of 25mm thick and i am really pleased. Love that there is no cable to get tangles up in. Not sure why you need variable speed, but that might become apparent if sawing really dense wood. I would definitely recommend and wouldn't hesitate to buy again.
