FULL DESCRIPTION
The Rutlands® R80 1/2" router delivers exceptional power at 2200W, whilst providing a smoother, more controlled freehand routing experience. A newly designed, linear ball bearing guided plunge mechanism vastly improves on the standard rigid plunge action, often prone to lateral movement. These ball bearing guides provide the smoothest, class-leading, friction free plunge stroke light enough to operate with just one hand. Plunging up to a depth of 70mm, the R80 travels through its range without excessive play or tightness, allowing routing with a higher level of accuracy and control. Depth adjustment is quickly and precisely controlled using the fine adjustment knob to a resolution of 0.1mm, clearly marked in easy to read graduations. A 3 turret depth stop and graduated depth scale allow for up to three different cut depths to be pre-set, ideal for making incremental passes.

The powerful 2200W motor runs at a variable speed range of between 9,000 – 22,000rpm, maintaining a constant rotational speed, even under demanding loads. Each of the six settings and its corresponding motor speed are visible just below the dial for quick reference. Soft start technology ensures that the motor is brought up to speed gradually, supressing any shock on start-up. The ergonomically contoured soft grip handles ensure optimum control of the router and feature a handle-mounted power switch for ease of use. A safety lock mechanism prevents accidental start-up, whilst a locking button allows the motor to run continually, ideal for extended use. The tool-free template guide system removes the need for screws, allowing quick and easy installation and interchange of guide bushings, minimising downtime during template work. Simply pull out the spring-loaded lever, place a guide within the base opening and release the lever to lock securely in place.

The 160mm diameter base is CNC machined from a strong aluminium die casting, offering superior rigidity and strength whilst reducing overall weight. An anti-friction, non-marring plastic sub base ensures a smooth sliding movement over the workpiece. The flat front face of the base has been designed to provide stability with the router lying down, making bit changes both quicker and easier. The R80 router is supplied with a 37mm diameter dust port, 1/2" & 1/4" collets, collet spanner, adjustable straight edge guide, trimmer guide, template guide and chip guard. ©

Value for money 1/2" router

I purchased this router for fitting latches & locks to new internal doors throughout our house. I'd previously used auger bits & found it tricky to get the hole completely square so I took advantage of this item being on a daily discount.

First impression was that this is a heavy piece of kit when compared to a cordless 1/4" router that I already own. The weight wouldn't be an issue when the router is used upright on a workbench as intended, but I was holding it sideways against an already-hung door - it's certainly not impossible to use but extra care was definitely needed!

I've used this router in tandem with a Rutlands 30mm guide bush & a Trend Lock Jig. Even with all the Lock Jig spacers in place, I found that the 10mm projection of the guide bush was ever-so-slightly too much & the router wouldn't sit quite flush on the Lock Jig faceplate as the guide bush was touching the edge of the door. None of this is Rutlands fault - afterall, it's not marketed for use on other, non-Rutlands jigs - I'm just pointing it out in case anyone else finds it useful for reference in their own projects.

Overall, I find this a great piece of kit for my intended use case (I've since MacGyver'd a fix for the guide bush depth). The router's depth stops, measurements & slow start are all comparable to more expensive models & changing a router bit and/or guide bush is simple. I'm sure others will find it good value for money & extremely useful in a workshop environment. I definitely plan to use it on other projects in future.

Go on, take the plunge (pun intended)!

Excellent Product Value

I have not had this router long but I cannot think of anything that represents better value for money and coupled with its thoughtful, simple & sturdy design, it is brilliant for what it is. The Rutlands brass guide bush adapter, not the included black guide bush, fits in the quick change system and makes life so much easier for when you want it. I do use a centring cone from an old router to be sure though. Excellent.

Excellent first router

As a newbie to the world of routers, I attended an introduction to routing course, provided by a different company, this router compares favourably with the routers I used on the course though a lot, lot cheaper. So far I would say this performs as well as any of the routers that I used on the course. Fantastic value for money, so far any problems have been down to my inexperience rather than the router. It is very smooth, the handles are ergonomically ideal for me. Looking forward to more opportunities to use it. I would avoid buying router bit sets, even though they look very attractive, just spend the money on the bits you need.

Great router

Very sturdy and easy to use and control. A good decision to depart from my usual Makita brand. Very, very pleased it has been more than capable of working seasoned oak to full depth of the 50mm worktop bit. I would highly recommend this router.
